Leading Northern brewer Daniel Thwaites has mounted a campaign to get people to sign up to the ‘Axe the Tax’ petition, designed to get the government to re-think the 30 per cent duty that is currently levied on a pint of beer.
With five pubs closing every day and 7,500 forecasted to shut in the future, budget plans have outlined further rises in beer duty in each of the next four years – with potentially crippling results for the British institution of the pub.
Now Daniel Thwaites has contacted all pubs that sell its beer to encourage them to promote ‘Axe the Tax’ to their customers, and has launched its own campaign to raise awareness of the initiative.
Managing director Peter Morris said: “Beer sales in pubs are already at the lowest level for 40 years and these persistent and large duty increases are bringing the industry to its knees."
“Axe the Tax has already received widespread support and every Daniel Thwaites employee is now involved, whether that be through their email signatures, branding on their company cars or livery on the delivery vehicles."
“We have produced literature for all of our pubs and all of our cask ales now carry a sticker supporting the campaign."
“It is crucial that this message is heard by government and hopefully those who enjoy the surroundings and atmosphere of the British pub will help us make a stand and protect the industry.”
