Gold Star As Thwaites Completes Medal Hat-Trick

25/11/2008

The ‘star’ quality of two Daniel Thwaites beers has seen them scoop prestigious accolades from the European Beer Awards.

Judges from 12 different nations gathered for one of the world’s largest beer competitions, and awarded a Gold Beer Star to Thwaites 200th anniversary commemorative brew Double Century, along with a Silver award for the up and coming Wainwright Ale.

The double success follows on from 2007 gold recognition for Thwaites Lancaster Bomber, completing an impressive hat-trick for the Lancashire brewer.

This year’s awards came in the Golden Ale and English Best Bitter classes for Double Century and Wainwright respectively, and head brewer Steve Fielding believes they highlight the early success enjoyed by both beers.

He said: “Double Century was originally created to mark Daniel Thwaites’ high profile bi-centenary celebrations but was so well received by beer lovers that it became a permanent fixture in our range – and I think this honour shows exactly why."

“We are delighted that, after such a short space of time, Double Century is already so highly respected as a top British beer, which makes the silver for Wainwright a phenomenal achievement given it’s only been available for six months."

“The European Beer Star Awards see 60 judges comparing around 600 beers so these three medal wins are a very proud achievement for us.”

To mark the success Daniel Thwaites will launch a celebratory four pack called ‘Winning Selection’, giving customers the chance to sample each of the successful beers. (January 09)

Brands marketing manager Lee Williams believes the awards are ringing endorsement of an investment policy which has seen Daniel Thwaites develop new styles of beer in recent years.

He said: “It is great that we are starting to see the rewards from that strategy, both Double Century and Wainwright are much lighter in colour and more hoppy in flavour than the other beers in our range but we knew that consumers would embrace them."

“It is a glowing tribute to Steve Fielding as a brewer that we have scooped another two medals and we are looking forward to getting Winning Selection on the shelves so that people can judge for themselves!”
